Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) weight management medication in Primary Care

GPs are now able to prescribe Mounjaro injection for weight loss to certain patient groups, but the criteria are strict.  Your GP can refer eligible patients for Mounjaro but only if the following criteria are met:

  • Adults (aged 18 and over) with a BMI of 35kg/m2 or above (or 32.5 kg/m2 for people from Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds),

AND

At least FOUR out of the following five diagnosed health conditions:

  1. Established Type 2 diabetes
  2. Hypertension requiring blood pressure lowering therapy
  3. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
  4. Obstructive sleep apnoea where treatment is indicated i.e. continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
  5. Dyslipidaemia requiring treatment

If you qualify for treatment you will need to also agree to a referral to wrap around supportive care.  This is a 9 month programme, delivered in various ways to suit your individual circumstances.  In order for your prescription of Mounjaro to continue, you MUST accept and continue with this part of the treatment package.  Should you stop attending this support your prescription will be discontinued.

If you do not meet the above criteria  there are still weight loss interventions that can help.  Please check out HealthyYou services locally where you can self-refer for support Healthy You Tier-2 services or arrange a routine GP consultation to discuss other options to lose weight and improve your health.

If you DO fully meet the criteria, please arrange a routine GP consultation to discuss a referral, by visiting/calling any of our reception teams, requesting an sms booking link, or submitting an online contact form via https://accurx.nhs.uk/patient-initiated/d81043
