Contrary to what has been advertised in the media, GPs cannot prescribe injections for weight loss. Your GP can however refer eligible patients to a “Healthy You Tier-3 services” for assessment and “wrap around care”, including consideration of injections but only if the following criteria are met:
A BMI of 40kg/m2 or above (or 37.5 kg/m2 for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds),
AND
At least FOUR out of the following five diagnosed health conditions:
- Established Type 2 diabetes
- Hypertension requiring blood pressure lowering therapy
- Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
- Obstructive sleep apnoea where treatment is indicated i.e. continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
- Dyslipidaemia requiring treatment
If you do not meet the above criteria, you can still self-refer to the Healthy You Tier-2 services to discuss other options to lose weight and improve your health.
If you do fully meet the criteria above please book a routine GP appointment.
