Gestational Diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy)
If you have had gestational diabetes, you are at a higher risk of developing Type II diabetes later in life.
What we do:
- Annual blood test to check your sugar levels to ensure there is no progression to prediabetes or Type II diabetes.
Type II diabetes
Type II diabetes is where the blood sugar levels are too high, often due to the hormone insulin not working adequately (insulin resistance). If left untreated, high blood sugars can lead to complications that can involve your feet, eyes and kidneys. People with diabetes are also at higher risk of heart attack and stroke. Type II diabetes is a HbA1c > 48 (confirmed by a second test).
The good news:
Type II diabetes is treatable and if appropriate action is taken people can put their diabetes into remission, where the blood sugars return to normal without the need for medication. Initial fundamental principles are ensuring a healthy lifestyle, a normal weight and taking adequate regular physical exercise. Furthermore, medications can be added where needed.
What we do:
- Annual blood tests are taken alongside foot checks, blood pressure and pulse checks to assess and monitor your progress. You will be invited for annual diabetic eye screening. Your case will be reviewed by a GP and if further action is required a follow up appointment will be offered with a clinician with a specialist interest in diabetes. Interim checks are undertaken for those who require closer monitoring .
